I have the honor to acknowledge the
receipt of your Lordship's Despatch No. 61 of the 14 October last, and in compliance with the instructions contained therein I beg to state
as follows-
The Assessment and collection of
the
Police Rate
was originally established in the Colony on the 14th July 1845, for the period of one year
from that date, and the late Mr. Pope, Clerk of Works and Civil Engineer, in conjunction
with Mr. Sarrant, then a clerk in the
Surveyor General's Office,
were appointed Assessors and Collectors. Sir J. Davis at the
end of that period ordered the sum
of $100 to
